The internships available through AMSA allow premed members to gain valuable policy and grassroots organizing experience by representing the Jack Rutledge Legislative Director at partner meetings and conferences, by attending strategy meetings within AMSA, , and by preparing official statements and conducting health care systems research.  No previous experience is necessary, but applicants should have strong writing skills, an ability to work within a team and independently, a willingness and capacity to research health care issues, and most importantly, a passion for the intern-specific issue of health care reform! There are three categories of AMSA premedical interns who will work with the office of the Jack Rutledge Legislative Director:

The Health Care for All Intern (Universal Healthcare):

The Health Care for All Intern will help coordinate AMSA’s part in the national campaign to shape the health care system under the next president and to expand access to healthcare for everyone.  They will also be involved in projects coordinated by the Jack Rutledge Legislative Director and the Health Care for All Steering Committee to help in the framing of the health care debate.  

 

The Legislative Affairs Intern (Health Policy):

The Health Policy Intern will assist the Jack Rutledge Legislative Director and the Health Policy Team with the ongoing research and implementation of our Legislative Agenda.  

 

The Global Health Intern:

Global Health Intern will work with the Global Health Committee to defend access to treatment for people in the developing world through advocacy around key legislation and education.

Mabelle Arole Fellowship through the JSI Research and Training Institute:

The AMSA Foundation has partnered with JSI Research and Training Institute to offer a year-long international health placement for a premed that has been accepted to medical school and is willing to take a year off to participate in the community health training experience in Jamkhed, India.  The Mabelle Arole Fellow will live, work, and learn in Jamkhed, India for one year. During that time, s/he will have experience in the hospital (in-patient and out-patient and in the field) and work on a project, depending on current CRHP activities and needs and your interest.The year begins with a 2-month course on community-based primary health care, with about 20 participants from India and other countries, most of whom are working in health and development programs. Course topics include principles and practice of CBPHC, common diseases, leadership, and personal development. The training is participatory, with a lot of interaction with participants and resource persons; much of the training is facilitated by staff and village peopleThe fellow will live and work on the CRHP compound, which includes the hospital, administration offices, training institute, and staff housing. Lodging is simple and basic (single or double room with a private or shared bathroom with Western-style toilet). There is a mess hall, which provides typical Indian meals. The fellow will stay in India for almost one year, at Jamkhed for 10 months and the opportunity to travel for one month (his/her own plans and expenses). The fellow will be paid a stipend of $8000 in quarterly payments.

AMSA Presidential Internship on Physician Leadership & Education:

This year, the National President will be working with interns to develop AMSA's materials on the following issues: health disparities and social justice, physician leadership, alumni mentorship and for our 2008 convention in New Orleans.  In addition, any student who would like to suggest additional topics is welcome to do so. AMSA now needs assistance from enthusiastic premedical students who are willing to assist with background research, position paper development, and creation of student activism opportunities on these issues.  Interns will gain valuable health policy and organizing experience by researching and preparing written documents, interacting with other student and medical organizations, and discussing issues with students and health professionals.  No previous experience is necessary, but applicants should have strong writing skills, ability to work independently, willingness to work hard, and most important, a passion for the issue and for AMSA!  In order to apply, please note the following application guidelines: Internships are 4-8 weeks in length and held at the AMSA National Office in Reston, a half-hour outside of Washington DC in Northern Virginia.  They are available year-round; dates are flexible.  Electives are full-time.  Academic credit can be arranged with your home institution.  Although AMSA cannot provide a stipend, free housing is available.
